Our Vision for Music at South Church
Through our incredibly rich music program, we strive to provide opportunities for everyone - young and old - of all musical tastes, backgrounds, and abilities. We know that making music together “out of our different cultures, languages, backgrounds, and, yes, musical tastes - can be a radical act.” But we want it to be said of South Church that we are a community that embraces each other. We want to be known as “the kind of place where they joyfully sing one another's songs."

Sanctuary Choir The Sanctuary Choir welcomes adult and high school singers of all backgrounds and abilities. Our ensemble consists of 30 or more dedicated choristers who love to sing to the glory of God and to share their ministry through music at South Church. This group values each others individual gifts and offerings and works hard to present quality music throughout the year. Rehearsals begin in September. Repertoire spans the genres ranging from Gwyneth Walker, Manhattan Transfer, and Meredith Monk, to choral major works from the Contemporaries to the Bach. Youth Choir The South Church Youth Choir is a vibrant group of singers ranging from grades 3-8. All ability levels are welcome to participate in this fun ensemble that just may surprise you with some musical theater, liturgical dance, and even drumming! Youth singers learn the basics of sight-singing, working as an ensemble, and they experience the joy of sharing their voices with God in an exciting and team-building environment! Our Youth choir has a busy schedule with outside field trips, fundraisers, collaborations with choirs when possible (both inside and outside of South church), and serves as a strong presence in our worship services. All interested singers may try out this ensemble by attending any of our rehearsals throughout the year.

Youth Chamber Ensemble Our new Youth Chamber ensemble exists for youth who have an interest in more advanced liturgical music and difficult part singing. This small group is reserved for youth with strong musical backgrounds and all singers should have an ability to read music and understand basic rhythmic notation. Using a variety of methods (including Kodaly and Orff), youth are encouraged to develop their musical skills through rhythmic exercises, solfeggio, foreign language, part singing, and by working on challenging choral repertoire from various genres. All chamber singers are participants in our Youth Choir that meets on Thursdays and are encouraged to join the chamber singers from the director. This ensemble serves as an additional option for those with heartier appetites for challenging music!

Jubilation Ringers
Our Handbell ensemble, the Jubilation Ringers, is welcoming any and all to join in the fun! This group plays up to four octaves of a set of English hand bells, and will begin to explore our recently purchased chimes in the ’11-’12 music season. Handbells are one of the most accessible instruments for the “non-musician” and our ringers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and musical abilities. Many of our ringers have no experience playing an instrument at all, yet provide glorious, polished music that enriches our worship services several Sundays throughout the year. Our repertoire is Christian and Classical in nature-exciting in performance! All those interested are encouraged to participate in an introductory workshop that occurs in September and in the spring. Join us as we expand our bell program this year.
Thursdays 6:00-7:15pm & Performance Sundays 9:45am, Sanctuary (Music Room for the cold winter months!) - Contact:

Jazz Disciples Does Dixieland make your toes tap? Do you melt when you hear a soft ballad backed by a smooth rhythm section? How about a sultry voice backed by a stellar horn section? That is our Jazz Disciples here at South Church! Consisting of piano, guitar, bass, accordion, drums, trombones, vocals, tenor sax, clarinet and trumpet, this group participates in a number of church services throughout the year. This vibrant ensemble was created after a mission trip to the devastated post-Hurricane Katrina south land, and has expanded its reach into the community, performing regularly at public events, nursing homes, and private parties. Repertoire ranges from “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans” to “Basin Street Blues” and a re-energized rendition of “Stand By Me”. Check us out!

Church Instruments
The Sanctuary organ is a 3-manual tracker pipe organ built by George Bozeman. Jr. and Co. A Steinway grand piano also graces the sanctuary. There are 6 pianos used regularly at South Church. Instrumentalists from the congregation are warmly encouraged to share their musical gifts in regular services and as part of any special musical works which take place. We are privileged to have string, wind, and brass players among us, as well as pianists, organists, and vocal soloists. Percussionists, classical and contemporary guitar players, and liturgical dancers further enhance the rich array of musical and artistic offerings at South Church.
