Adult Programs

Education is a lifelong process. We never stop being learners. This is particularly true of our need for ongoing Christian formation. Our Adult Christian Education Program at South Church is designed to help all of us, at whatever stage of life, deepen our knowledge and faith, and to integrate our faith and our gifts into our lives within this rapidly changing world. Opportunities are offered throughout the year in a variety of formats so that each of us may find ways to grow and mature as Christian believers.

We hope everyone will be able to find something of interest within this list of Spiritual Growth Opportunities and special events. Whether you are just considering membership, are a new member, or longtime parishioner, this is your opportunity to get involved at South Church.

Faith Forums
FAITH FORUMS are a Sunday morning spiritual study and discussion group. Join us each Sunday morning before worship for a "wake up" cup of coffee, stimulating conversation, and a caring community. We plan to study a number of topics during the year. Please join us Sunday mornings at 9:15 in the church library.

Lenten Book Study w/OnLine Option
Conversations with Scripture: The Gospel of Mark by Marcus Borg

Classes held: Tuesdays, February 28 through April 3 from 7:00-8:30pm (parlor) &
Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15am, starting on March 4 (library)

Terry Ebner is trying something new. For those with extensive, little or absolutely no experience reading the Bible, all are invited to join in the conversation through a BLOG and/or as part of a small discussion group. Books are available in the church office for $15.00.

Participants are encouraged to read the entire Gospel of Mark, which takes two hours on average, at one sitting. Relatively few have ever done this and it’s well worth the effort! We’ll discuss initial reactions during our first meeting and dive right into the Introduction to Borg’s book. Conversation will continue online through a BLOG. (Link to be added very soon!)

Book Nooks
All past BOOK NOOK books are now available in the church library. The Adult Education ad-hoc committee purchased the books offered in study groups over the past 5 years, as well as a collection of books written by J. Philip Newell. The books are stored on a reserved shelf under the window along with a list of all books available. If you missed reading one that you were interested in, you now have a chance to borrow the book for your own enjoyment.

Graduates
The GRADUATES are people who are 50 and over who enjoy hospitality, entertainment, education, service and fellowship. We meet the 3rd Saturday of the month starting in October through April. Communication is through the Church newsletter and the Graduates bulletin board located in the hall near the kitchen.

Men's Group
The MEN’S GROUP meets every Wednesday from 6:30 - 7:30am, and we would like your participation. Come and gather for conversation, humor, support, and fellowship. We talk about life at South Church, family, vocation, hobbies, God, sports, politics, business, pop culture, and anything else on our minds. We invite you to share your joys and your concerns in a safe, confidential, friendly, and nurturing group. This is not a “committee” and we do not require a long term commitment from you. You do not need a reservation, and we don’t take attendance. But we do guarantee that you will feel more connected to the other men in this congregation and more engaged in the life of this wonderful and caring church community. So, come any Wednesday and experience the collective wit, wisdom, and welcome of the SOUTH CHURCH MEN’S GROUP. You’ll be glad you did!

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Calling all needle crafters - novice to expert…to join in the creation of prayer shawls and baby blankets. Stitch by stitch, our mission is to wrap others with love and warmth in times of need and celebration. Monthly meetings are open to all; instructions and patterns for prayer shawls are available. For those who are unable to join meetings, feel free to create on your own. Upon delivery of completed work, please sign the Prayer Shawl log in the church office.
